Children's book explains real world conflicts in Africa.
Trying to explain war and poverty is not an easy task, especially when your audience is children. Congolese artist Séraphin Kajibwami has written and illustrated a graphic novel that tackles the job of explaining one of the greatest humanitarian crisis' in the new millennium.
His book “Roza or the Courage to Choose Life,” takes children page by page through the conflict that has devastated the Democratic Republic of the Congo over the past decade.
The book is being promoted by Caritas Internationalis and the Catholic Church of Canada. Their aim is to teach children about the conflict through the story of a woman named Roza, who lived through the violence and is working to teach the women of her village how to read and grow new crops.
By telling her story, the book explains how war has divided the country and led to the creation of child soldiers. And in the face of millions of people being displaced from their homes, how the locals are working to rebuild their communities and educate the youth.
